Besides helping people achieve financial security through homeownership, I’d like to share another one of my passions with you – Cooking!

Justin’s Steamed Mussels

This recipe was inspired by a dish I used to get at Dominick’s in the Bronx.  It was the best Italian bread dunking experience I’ve ever had, and I have been trying to re-create it for over 20 years.  This is the closest I’ve come so far…

2 tbsp olive oil

4 tbsp butter

4-5 thinly sliced largish garlic cloves

¼ tsp crushed red pepper

1 28oz. can whole peeled tomatoes

3/4 tsp salt

¼ tsp dried thyme

¾ cup dry white wine

3 tbsp chopped parsley

2 lbs. frozen or fresh cleaned mussels – You will have to head to Scanga in Salida to get mussels that don’t already include seasoning

2-3 tbsp Italian breadcrumbs

1 1/2 tbsp fresh lemon juice

In a saucepan with a lid, sauté garlic and red pepper in butter and olive oil.  Add tomatoes and smash with wooden spoon.  Add salt, thyme, wine, and parsley.  Simmer for 1 hour on low.  Add mussels and turn heat to high.  Cover.  Wait 3 minutes.  With cover secured, swish the pot to stir everything up.   Uncover and remove unopened mussels.  Add breadcrumbs and lemon juice.  Cover and stir everything up once more.  Heat again to simmer and then remove from heat.  Serve with crusty Italian bread for dunking.

I hope your family enjoys this recipe! If you are looking for home-planning (or cooking) advice, I would be happy to be a resource!
