Colorado Mountain College is the primary educational resource for people in the Central Rocky Mountains. It is also the largest community college district in Colorado - 12,000 square miles, an area larger than the state of Vermont. Each year, more than 20,000 full and part-time students attend classes at 12 educational sites including the CMC Center in Buena Vista.
Locally Colorado Mountain College offers academic programs leading to Associate in Arts, Associate in Arts/Business Emphasis, and Associate in Science degrees, transferable to four-year colleges and universities, as well as Associate in Applied Science degrees and certification programs in Accounting, Business, computers, criminal justice Early Childhood Profession, and Small Business Management.
CMC provides extensive computer training for novices and those seeking to upgrade their skills with one-day workshops and more comprehensive courses leading to a Microcomputer specialist certificate. The CMC computer lab is networked, linked to the Internet, and upgraded regularly.
Many local businesses take advantage of the specialized business training workshops which can be set up at any time by contacting the CMC local Center.
Students who successfully complete the Associate in Arts or Science degrees are accepted by most Colorado universities or colleges at the junior level and experience great success, partially due to the excellence of CMC faculty, many of whom have taught at major universities nation-wide.
Colorado Mountain College has signed an articulation agreement with Pueblo Community College allowing students to complete locally all the prerequisite courses for many health related degrees. Through another articulation agreement with Regis University, CMC is able to offer 75 percent of the credit requirement for a Regis’ bachelor degree at CMC prices in a large number of majors. Teacher licensure, licensed professional counselor and master’s degree programs are also available, all done through Guided Independent Study or televised courses for the convenience of students at a distance.
Thanks to the support of CMC grants, adult basic education and preparation to the GED is offered at no cost. Academic counseling, GED testing, financial aid services are available locally.
